With more than 100 works by Ansel Adams, contemporary artists and the photographers that influenced him, the design sought to make legible for visitors the experience of looking forward and back through time as one moved through seven thematic sections covering Adams' career. In reference to Adams' technical process within his Zone System, monochromatic frames were used in hues of white, gray, and near-black with each associated to the three types of work on view: contemporary, Ansel Adams, and predecessor. Set against the dark, black backdrop of the gallery, these seemingly floating frames provide a secondary system to gallery text for visitors to perceive the different works featured while integrated into a cinematic viewing experience that allows the eye to focus on select groupings at a time.
